Raven Cliff Falls Trail in Caesars Head State Park, S.C.

After our mid week rains, this weekend looks especially good for hiking. We will hike the well maintained Raven Cliff Falls and Gum Gap trails in Caesars Head State Park. Our meeting place will be the Pisgah Forest Walmart parking lot (back of center aisles close to Taco Bell) at 8:30 AM. From there we will drive to the visitor center where we will take care of the $3 per person entrance fee, visit the restrooms if necessary, explore the short trail near the Visitor Center with tremendous views, and then drive to the Raven Cliff trailhead. Raven Cliff Trail is wide with moderate ups and downs. After turning onto Gum Gap Trail we descend to the Middle Saluda River, sometimes steeply, but assisted by steps. The river, with its awesome suspension bridge, makes for a nice lunch spot, and is also our turn-around spot. On the return we will take the 1/2-mile spur to the Raven Cliff Falls overlook. It’s possible we will see the last of the fall color. Overall about 8 miles and 1450 feet of ascent.
